Le Tigre Lounge In Madison
When in Madison recently Dan took me to "Le Tigre Lounge" which is a very cool retro bar with a tiger theme (obviously) and an old-time jukebox. We talked with the son of the owner who bartends there and he talked a lot about the history of the bar. They don't have a web site but they do have a good Yelp! review where they specifically mention their "no swearing" policy which is a decent policy at a bar where people are trying to relax.
The son said they didn't have a web site but we told him that he could use a blog like blogger (or word press) and have one up in a few minutes. Heck, he can even borrow my picture up above.

I decided to stop by Le Tigre last week and check it out. I'd heard various comments in the past, from friends, and most of them weren't complimentary. I don't mind tacky, I don't mind low-rent, but this place is just plain weird. I couldn't figure out who their clientele might be. Clubby, working class, ethnic, gay? Non of them seemed to fit. Or maybe I missed it. I am a Wisconsin native and so I've seen my share of neighborhood taverns, and usually like them, but Le Tigre doesn't seem to be that, either. Not really homey, but not edgy enough either, to actually be cool. The bartender was friendly and he left us alone to our conversation. A plus. The juke box is a hoot: Pasty Cline, Beatles, Johnny Cash, Frank Sinatra, etc. My drink was only so-so. The biggest problem I had with the place was the overwhelming mildew odor. It hits you when you walk in the door. Has there been water standing in the basement for years and years? And really, it's the sort of place I'd like to like. There aren't enough original old fashioned bars around any more, where you feel like a guest/family member. Social drinking for the well-behaved seems to be a thing of the past. There was a time when asking someone what bar(s) they liked told you a whole lot about them. Le Tigre would be considerably more inviting if they would just clean it up a bit - not a lot, just a bit.
