Victoria Bitter... Maybe?

Back in the late 90's I visited Australia, a beautiful country. One of the best parts of Australia was a local beer called "Victoria Bitter" which was pretty much everywhere and readily available.

Alas, you can't find this beer in the United States. Here is a guy that is trying to "make a difference" and put up a blog solely to try to bring this beer to the United States. I will try to put a comment on his blog and have him (I assume it is a guy, could be a beer-swilling girl, I guess) take a look see at this post.

I saw this Foster's Special Bitter over at Binny's (while I was considering taxes, up above) and tried it, thinking maybe this really is Victoria Bitter. It has been a long time since I was in Australia and I don't really remember what it tasted like, and this is in a can and not a bottle, so I can't say for sure whether or not this is the same beer or even close. I thought maybe some loyal or even occasional reader could offer some insight...

As a home brewer I have brewed a style called ESB, or Extra Special Bitter. Oddly, it is not bitter at all. I like Foster's but never seen or tried their ESB before.

I am in the same situation. I was in the Navy from 1997-2001 and visted Australia twice on deployments. I'm not sure if this is what I remember VB to taste like. It's a pretty solid, good tasting beer, but I'm not sure it lives up to VB. I'd like to know if this was Foster's export version.

I had the same hopes when I saw this beer before getting on the train. I was Australia a few months ago and always bring some VB back. As I'm drink the Foster's SB right now I know it's not going to taste near as good as the real stuff at home.

I was in the Marines and made a little 3 month stop in Aussie. I got pissed on VB many of those nights. Oh how I dream of the day when I can taste that bitterness I miss so much. (P.S. I also miss Australias XXXX beer! That was also a great beer.)

Foster's bitter is made in Georgia and Texas. It's not quite the same as VB. It IS good though.

There is literally one place in the entire continent you can find VB. It's at Cellar 360, a wine and beer store located in San Francisco, and owned by the Foster's brewing empire. They have a club you can join where you can get 3 cases delivered to the store for pickup every few months. Or you can just go there and buy a sixer.

Price is reasonable, but they do NOT ship, and can't, due to US laws on alcohol.

And yeah, VB is awesome. Great hot weather beer.

Hi - Foster's Special has nothing to do with VB as far as I know. You can get VB in any bar in Melbourne, haven't seen Special for years.
