Baseball Pool?

I have been thinking about how to do a baseball pool for this year and finally had an epiphany.

Each person in the pool would choose one team. I, of course, would have my beloved Milwaukee Brewers. Only one team per player.

The winner would be the person with who has the team with the most wins. Each other player has to pay the winner the difference in wins, at the price of one dollar per win. So if the Brewers had, say, 118 wins this year (heh) and the Cubs had 84 (heh) the guy who had the Cubs would have to pay me $34. All of the loser teams would pay the winner. The money will be redeemable in the form of Amazon gift certificates, easily emailed to the winner so I don't have to deal with any money. There will be only one winner, and in the unlikely event of a tie, the team with the most home runs wins the pool. It the home runs are tied, next tie breaker is stolen bases.

Anyone interested has to be someone that can be vouched for by any one of this blogs authors.

Each team can be represented only once, so first come, first served. In other words, only one person can have the Cubs, Sox, etc.

Frankly I don't care how many people enter, I think it would be fun to get a few guys (or girls) together in this thing and have some fun and some trash talking to boot. It would also make me follow baseball more than usual this summer (brew crew usually done talking playoffs by the fourth of July) and I will put up a daily update on the standings.

Any takers? All teams are open except the Brew Crew, reserved for me. Start dropping comments here and I will get it all set up.

Hey DFM ! Looks like you figured out about the only "simple" way of having a pool without a lot of effort - like a fantasy league. I'm not a big baseball guy, but I would enjoy reading the threads. If I did get in it would be the Tribe first or Yankees after that - feel free to hate on me now...

BTW - too bad about Stro's...

Dan from Madison said...

Yea, I wanted to avoid the fantasy league thing, I don't have time to go over the starting pitchers every day and who is batting right vs. left, etc. So, jtc are you in or not? The teams are first come, first served, and I will vouch for you.

I really don't think there will be too much hate here (and I won't allow it), trash talking for sure, but baseball doesn't really bring the hate like football.

yes, too bad about Astros place, but so be it. Sounds like he has a lot on his plate.

If you know astro, he'll be back. Maybe a month, maybe 6 or maybe not till next season. I'm not much for baseball, but I'll let JJ know, he will be thrilled. SK8

I already dropped jj a line.

Hell, WD may even join your pool!

Dan from Madison said...

Cool, I dropped a comment over at his place as well.

I'm probably stupid, but how do you read the odds? is 50/1 or 200/1 better? I think I'm reading them wrong because 50/1=50, 200/1=200, and 200 is much higher than 50...

Since Carl has the Sox I'll take the Tigers... at least if they kick the Sox's ass in the division I may have some consolation.

Death and rebirth DFM, how cathartic.

DFM, thanks for the invite, but I'm afraid I reserve my gambling money for my fantasy baseball league.

I'm not as rich as you guys, it appears... but thanks for the invite, and feel free to drop by The Pond at any time!

Snake, the bigger the number, the worse the odds of winning the world series. For the Cardinals, for instance it stands at 8/1. In other words if you bet one dollar and the Cards win the world series, you would win eight back. Tampa Bay looks like the longest shot at this point at 200/1. From this you can determine that the higher the number, the worse the oddsmakers predict that team to be, and therefore the longer shot.

Hey WD, thanks for dropping by. I don't get the not as rich comment though. I thought this would be easy and relatively cheap. The most anyone can lose is $50, if they have the very worst team and someone else has the very best team which is pretty cheap for a full season of entertainment.

I'm in DFM! If Wonderduck wants the CUBS that is fine with me (he does live there I think) and I'll take the Mariners...Otherwise, I'll TAKE THE CUBBIES FOR SURE!!!

johnnyj said...

Also, I like the idea but if I wanted to win why don't I just pick the mets, yankees, twins, etc? Maybe there is some kind of twist we can put on it...

Is an equal (dollar value) amount of booze acceptable instead of cash? Just wondering, fine with me either way...

Get in here Snakeye and JTI! I want to bash on your tribe all summer!

Dan from Madison said...

Sorry JJ, the rules are the rules and the prizes are the prizes. If you want to do some sidebetting for booze, go ahead, fine with me. WD isn't playing, so you have the Cubbies, main post updated.

Yes, it is obvious that we have a bunch of losing teams here and if you really wanted to win the pool you would simply take the Yankees or Cards or Mets or whomever. But I really just want to do it for fun and pride - if I really wanted to win do you think I would have the Brewers?

johnnyj said...

Sounds good Dan...I'll take the Cubbies for pride...I'm sure there will be sidebets! Thanks for putting this together, should be fun!

Dan from Madison said...

You very well may win the thing, they are supposed to be good this year. We will see.

johnnyj said...

DFM...we ARE talking about the CUBS here, "chocking" is sure to ensue and they will break my heart, again.

Dan from Madison said...

test - still workee?

Yep, still works.

Snake couldn't leave a comment, he wants the Indians, so shall it be.

I can only leave a comment with a fake webpage, thats why I was anynomous. And I'm hiding from the IRS of course.

Yeah, I told Trav I wasn't in and that the Tribe was "open". My other team is the Yankees (due to the history), but I'm just "not in". I actually turn down free tix to Tribe games (great seats too), even when they're playing well - it's like watching golf for me.

I WILL enjoy the comments from everyone though, and have Snake's back like he did with the Irish...

Carl from Chicago said...

I've gotta say it is kind of nutso to turn down free tix to a baseball game. There's a lot to see and do there, very relaxing. Especially for free...

jti said...

Carl : I've been to A TON of games - loges, club, reserved and general admission - never paid for a single seat. Maybe that's the problem ? As for baseball specifically - too sloooowwww for me. Browns - waste of time. Cavs - only because LeBron's playing. Again, maybe it's just too "familiar" of a situation for me...

johnnyj said...

JTI...Man I miss Shawn Kemp...Last I saw he was playing streetball down at Greenlake in Sea-town (seriously)...Another reason why I don't like basketball...

Are You going to pick a baseball team or what? Geez.

jti said...

jj : I'm not in. How many of his kids did Kemp have with him ?

Now if you stumbled into this blog by doing a search for single six pics, but you decided to hang around because the rest of the blog was interesting...just how in the heck do you get "vouched for"?

I will vouch for you for giving me a hard time. Pick your team and you are in Annie.
