Dubuque Danger

For the past few years my family has been spending a weekend in Galena, Illinois. This year we made a sidetrip to Dubuque to take part in a few of the tourst traps. One was this cable car ride. It has been taking people up and down the hill for many, many years. Click on any photo for a larger version.

Here is a shot from the bottom looking up - you don't pay in there, you pay the man at the top.

Next is a shot from inside the car looking down. You can see if that steel cable lets go, you are pretty much going to die. The ride was sort of eerie - smooth, but quiet. You can fit between six and eight adults inside.

When you get to the top, you have stunning views of Dubuque.

And here is a view from the top down the rail.

If you haven't been to Dubuque for a while I highly recommend it. It has been really cleaned up a lot from since I was there last, probably 20 years ago. They have a beautiful museum all about the city and the Mississippi River and lots of other touristy things to do.

Unfortunately, the cable ride here was deemed "unsafe" by certain people on this trip and probably won't be ridden again. But it was fun once.
