Carl's post called "Deathwish" was pretty funny to me because I live in one of the biking meccas of the universe, Madison, WI. The state of Wisconsin has also put a lot of resources into making the state a biking destination, mapping out a lot of country roads for bikers to travel on as well as maintaining a large amount of paths. The state trails carry a $15 per year user fee. By the way, for those not in the know, Wisconsin is very hilly in places - so you can have a challenging ride if you want.
There are tons of bike paths in and around Madison.
And we actually have biking lanes that are FOR bikes, rather than the City of Chicago's infamous "make the car lane smaller and paint some lines for bikes" lanes.
